Recognizing the importance and sensitivity of the Santiago Creek, the proposed Rio Santiago project will preserve the approximately 43 acres which is approximately 39 percent of the entire site. The Santiago Creek Greenway Reserve will maintain the natural open space state of this area, which will benefit project residents and surrounding neighbors in many ways:

  1. The act of preserving the Santiago Creek environment in its natural state will preserve the creek itself, its riparian habitat, and the flora and fauna that reside in and around the habitat.
  2. The Santiago Creek Greenway Reserve will serve as a buffer between the existing Mabury Ranch residents to the north of the site, and the recreational open space and senior community of Rio Santiago.
  3. The Santiago Creek Greenway Reserve may potentially provide for a future expansion area of the Santiago Oaks Regional Park, and may accommodate a regional trail access opportunity open to the greater Orange community that links points west of Rio Santiago with the Regional Park.
  4. The Preserve area will enable the Orange County Flood Control District to better maintain and preserve the creek edge from an aesthetic and public safety standpoint.

The Santiago Creek Greenway Preserve will be a place where the local community and residents of Orange of all ages can come to witness and appreciate the natural wonders and beauty of the Santiago Creek environment.
